The 1927 German expressionist silent film classic ‘Metropolis’, featuring an original score adaptation by legendary motion picture organist Clark Wilson is coming to Detroit! Masonic Lodge Detroit #2 is bringing this film event to the city and are proud to present this one time exhibition at the beautiful historic Detroit Masonic Temple.
One of the most important films in cinematic history and arguably the first landmark science fiction film, ‘Metropolis’ was directed by the visionary Fritz Lang. The film’s awesome set pieces and immense special effects production, featuring thousands of extras was unequaled in it’s time, and with few notable exceptions has gone unrivaled since. Soon after the film’s release in 1927 the prints began to be cut up, changing the composition of the film as well as the running time. In 2008, the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires came was informed of a print that had been in a private Argentinean collection since 1928. This print was combined with the archival print to create a legitimate restoration of the film the way director Fritz Lang had intended audiences to see it. This exhibition showcases this newly and meticulously restored print of ‘Metropolis’, The Complete Metropolis.
Accompanying the picture will be the original ‘Metropolis’ score, initially composed for an orchestra, comprehensively adapted to the theatre pipe organ by organist Clark Wilson. Clark Wilson, described as a “master of silent film and showman of the first order” by film critic Leonard Maltin, has created his own tour de force in this adaptation of the original orchestral score.
